Puppies, Smiles and a Warm Welcome: Petland Helps Ohio State University Freshmen Feel at Home

Starting college is an exciting milestone, but for many incoming freshmen, it can also bring uncertainty, stress and anxiety. A new campus, new routines and time away from family can make the transition challenging. Recently, Petland Pickerington and Petland Lewis Center helped make that transition a little easier—and a lot cuter—for hundreds of incoming students at The Ohio State University.

As part of a special welcome event for students during their first days on campus, Petland volunteers brought puppies to Ohio State to give freshmen an opportunity to take a break from the excitement and stress of starting college, meet new people and experience the comfort that only a puppy can provide.

The event was coordinated with The Salt Company, a student organization dedicated to serving students across Ohio State’s campus.

For the past five years, Petland has partnered with campus organizers to bring puppies to students during their transition to college. Lydia Guetzko with The Salt Company explained that the partnership began when she connected with Petland five years ago and learned that local Petland locations were willing to volunteer their time—and some adorable puppies—to help welcome students.

This year, hundreds of students stopped by to spend time with the puppies. For many, it was a fun opportunity to relax and take photos. For others, the experience provided something even more meaningful.

“We have heard incredible stories from students about how helpful the puppy therapy of this event has been—especially during the transition to college and the stress of the first day of classes,” Lydia shared.

One student’s experience particularly stood out to Lydia.

“She shared that she had experienced the worst anxiety she had ever faced during her transition to college, and petting a puppy was the first time she felt better since moving.”

Stories like this demonstrate the incredible impact of the human-animal bond. At Petland, we believe pets have a unique ability to bring comfort, joy and companionship into people's lives—and this event was a wonderful example of that connection in action.

“These puppies literally serve as both fun and therapy for the students,” Lydia said. “I’ve heard countless stories about how the connection with these puppies has been so helpful for students’ mental health and navigating college for the first time.”

“These community visits are essential because they allow us to bring the joy and comfort of pets directly into the communities we serve,” said Cara Slone, Petland Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator. “Our Pet Counselors look forward to these visits just as much as the people we visit. Seeing the smiles, excitement and meaningful connections that happen when people interact with our animals is incredibly rewarding. At Petland, we truly believe in the power of the human-animal bond, and these visits are a wonderful reminder of just how meaningful that connection can be.”

Beyond the calming effect of spending time with animals, the puppy visits also created opportunities for students to connect with one another. Hundreds of freshmen gathered around, sharing smiles, conversations and a few puppy cuddles while meeting people who may soon become lifelong friends.

“It’s been an amazing event for students to meet friends, pet a puppy and have fun,” Lydia said.

Petland and Petland Charities are proud to support programs and community events that celebrate the powerful relationship between people and pets. Whether visiting schools, daycares, nursing homes or college campuses, these experiences allow our team to share the joy and comfort animals can bring to people of all ages.

For the volunteers and staff involved, seeing the impact firsthand makes the experience especially meaningful.

“We could not be more grateful for the volunteers and puppies that come to this event,” Lydia shared. “It means so much to students, and it is the most incredible night. I could not say enough incredible things about the Petland staff and their kindness in hosting this event each year.”
