Dr. Rebecca Atwood: Elevating Standards for Pet Health

Since joining Petland in spring 2023, Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Rebecca Atwood has become a driving force behind the company’s commitment to consistent, science-based care for every pet. An alumna of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she oversees the full veterinary journey of pets in Petland’s care, researching best practices, consulting with experts, and guiding both corporate and franchise operations to uphold the highest health standards.

In her short tenure, Dr. Atwood has implemented major improvements, including a new immunization protocol that protects pets without over-vaccination and the development of upcoming genetic-testing requirements for large-breed dogs. Her leadership has also strengthened kennel health, reduced veterinary-related costs, and improved vaccine and transportation practices. Colleagues praise her balanced expertise; as VP Steve Steele notes, she brings “the perfect blend of medical knowledge, business operations, and animal welfare.”

Equally important has been her work reshaping perceptions within the veterinary and breeder communities. Through hands-on engagement with breeders and distributors in multiple states, Dr. Atwood has helped elevate care practices and expand understanding of responsible, purpose-bred puppies.

Dr. Atwood’s ultimate goal is to serve as a resource for Petland and the broader pet industry, improving pet welfare, advancing genetic standards, and helping shift the narrative so consumers feel confident purchasing pets from responsible, high-standard sources. Ultimately, she aims to ensure that every Petland pet is cared for using the most current, species-appropriate practices, contributing to a healthier future for pets everywhere.
